A Suburb Built in Two Chapters

A name change in 1965

Violet Town gained its present name in 1965, after former trainees of HMAS Tingira, a navy ship commissioned for training in 1912, requested it, and the suburb's plumbing still splits into two chapters.

The first chapter is the 1960s-70s build

The first houses on Violet Town Road were sewered just before clay pipe went out of use, and those first lines are now the weakest part of the network. Decades of reactive-clay soil movement have pushed the collars off true, so a drain that blocks twice is pointing at one bad section.

The second chapter is the later estates

The cul-de-sac stages joined up by Mcelwee Drive carry newer pipework in brick veneer homes. At the last census, 95.2 per cent of dwellings here were separate houses and 42.3 per cent had four or more bedrooms, so this is a suburb of family homes.

The ridge shapes the water

The blocks fall away toward the flats, and any downpipe aimed the wrong way dumps stormwater on the neighbour downhill. The quiet ends of the courts were plumbed with small pits that modern roofs and driveways simply overrun, and roots off the reserve margins work into the older sewer joints as the soil dries.

The Work This Suburb Calls For

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead. It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours).

Four hubs cover the jobs this housing stock produces:

  • Blocked drains: camera checks, jetting and root clears for the 1960s clay network, plus stormwater pits that fill with silt once the summer storms hit
  • Hot water: fixes and swaps for cylinders all wearing out together, plus a stand-in tank while you wait
  • Gas fitting: appliance connections, new lines and leak work done under a gas licence
  • Emergency plumbing: burst flexi hoses, cold-morning cylinder failures and storm overflow, available 24/7

Cylinders of one age. Hot water units fitted across the original estate in the same few years are wearing out together, and a family home may already be on its second or third.

Flexi hoses are the other sleeper. Braided connectors from 2000s bathroom makeovers are now past their rated life, and they can let go without warning.

Tingira Heights Questions, Answered

Do the old clay drains here need digging up if roots get in?

Not if the pipe is still whole. The camera shows the damage first, and a jetter clears the roots or a liner seals the joints in 1960s clay without opening the yard. If a section has shattered, the footage tells you that before anyone quotes a dig.

What happens if the hot water unit dies on a cold morning?

Ring us, since we are Available 24/7. The plumber tests the unit, and if it is beyond repair a loan tank keeps the showers warm until the new system arrives. You approve a fixed price before the old unit is disconnected.
